The view in the chat
Ask Claude or ChatGPT to show a workspace or a thing, and the answer arrives as the Everythings view: your workspace drawn in the conversation, with tiles to click, the thing's Markdown, its marks and its comments.
The view is an MCP App that comes with two tools, get_workspace_view and get_thing_view. The host draws it inline.
Where it appears
Every client gets the same data. A host that supports MCP Apps draws it as the view; other hosts answer from the same data as text.
| Where you chat | What you see |
|---|---|
| claude.ai | The view |
| Claude Desktop | The view |
| ChatGPT on the web | The view |
| ChatGPT's iPhone and Android apps | The text answer |
| Gemini | The text answer |
| Claude Code, the Gemini CLI and other CLIs | The text answer |
The view sits on a plain background that follows the host's light or dark theme, so it reads as part of the conversation. In Claude Code, the plugin's /things pane plays a similar part (see Related surfaces).

A workspace
get_workspace_view draws a workspace's top-level things.
- The workspace's name sits at the top. Click it to pick another workspace; with only one, it is a plain label.
- Each thing is a floating emoji tile with its name under it. A thing with several emojis shows up to three, layered; a thing with none shows 📄.
- Names longer than 30 characters are cut short. Hover a tile to read the whole name.
- When the workspace holds more things than the answer carried, a line under the tiles says how many are showing, such as Showing 100 of 240.
- Open this workspace in the app ↗ sits below the tiles.
- An empty workspace reads No things here yet.
The view opens on the workspace the agent asked for, else your default workspace, else your first one.
A thing
get_thing_view draws one thing's page.
The header
A breadcrumb runs across the top: the workspace, each parent thing, then the thing itself, each with its emoji, separated by ›.
When an agent wrote the thing, a ✦ chip with the agent's name follows the thing's name. It names the agent that last changed the thing, or else the one that created it; hover it to see which.
The thing's marks sit at the right of the breadcrumb, each a chip with its emoji and count. Your own marks are tinted. Hover a mark to see who carries it, with any agent that left one on its person's behalf listed as (agent).
open in app ↗, just below, opens the thing in Everythings.
The content
The thing's Markdown: headings, lists, checklists, tables, code, quotes, links, and centered or right-aligned text. An image shows as a small 🖼️ chip with its description; click it to open the image.
Sub-things and comments
Sub-things follow the content as tiles, the same as on a workspace. A thing with no sub-things shows none.
Comments come last, under a Comments label with their count. Replies sit indented under the comment they answer. Each comment shows its author and how long ago it was written, and a comment an agent posted for you says “via” and the agent's name. @mentions show as a highlighted @Name.
A question an agent asked about the thing shows between the content and the sub-things (see Questions in the view).
Clicking around
Every click asks for fresh data through your connection, so what you see is current as of that click. The view never refreshes on its own.
- A tile opens that thing in place, with a new
get_thing_viewcall. - A breadcrumb step walks back up: the workspace returns to its tiles, and a parent thing opens its own page. The breadcrumb is the way back; the view has no close button.
- The workspace name on the tile screen switches to another workspace, with a new
get_workspace_viewcall. - open in app ↗ opens the thing in Everythings. The view hands every link to the host to open, the links in a thing's content included.
While a click loads, the screen dims a little. If a read fails, a notice reads Couldn't load that with the reason, and the screen stays as it was. When the agent opened a thing directly, the view makes one small extra read of your workspaces so the picker is ready on the way back.
All of these calls only read, so browsing works on a read-only connection.
Ticking a checklist
The view writes one thing: a checklist box you tick or untick in a thing's content.
- The box flips at once, and the view saves the thing's whole content through
update_thing. - The save goes through the agent's connection, so it needs read & write access, and the app records the tick as that agent's edit.
- Ticks made in quick succession go out in order, and each save carries the latest state on screen.
- When a save is refused (a read-only connection, a host that declined the call, a thing that is gone), the box goes back and a notice reads Couldn't save that with the reason.
A tick saves the copy of the content the view opened with. If someone edited the thing elsewhere after the view opened, the tick replaces their edit. When it may have changed, open the thing again before you tick.
Questions in the view
When an agent has asked you something about a thing, the view shows the question on that thing's page, read-only.
- An open question reads “✦ agent is waiting on you”, then the question and its options as a list, then a line pointing you to the app, your phone or the chat.
- Earlier rounds of the same thread sit above it, with who said what and when.
- Once answered, it says who chose which option and where (on the web, on the phone, or in a chat), with any note they added. A dismissed question says so, and a thread the agent closed reads Resolved by the agent.
The view has no buttons for a question. An answer from it would go through the agent's own connection and read as the agent answering itself. Answer on the thing in the app, on your phone, or tell the agent in the chat, and it records your words with answer_request. More in Questions, inbox & @Agent.
When your agent shows it
Agents treat get_workspace_view and get_thing_view as display tools, called for you.
- When you ask to see, show or open something: “show me my workspaces”, “open my Recipes workspace”, “show me my music thing”.
- Right after a create or edit you asked for, so the finished thing appears in place for you to confirm or correct.
For its own reading, an agent uses get_thing, list_things, list_child_things and the other plain tools, so a page opens only when you asked for one. When the view is on screen, the agent's reply can skip repeating what it shows. The Tools reference has the full list.

/things in Claude Code
The Everythings plugin adds a pane beside the conversation. It shows your workspace and things, follows each thing the session writes, and lets you leave your own marks and comments. It shows a question read-only too.
/everythings:panel
A private panel on your claude.ai account that stays open beside the chat, refreshes on its own, and follows an agent's writes from any session. It only reads.
Both come with the Claude Code plugin.
Questions
Why does Claude draw my workspace as tiles?
Everythings ships an MCP App: get_workspace_view and get_thing_view come with an interactive page, and a host that supports MCP Apps draws it in place of the text. It reads your data over the connection you already approved. Other clients get the same data as text and answer from that.
Can the view change my data?
Only when you tick a checklist box. Clicking a tile, a breadcrumb or the workspace picker calls one of the two view tools, which only read. A tick saves the thing through update_thing over the agent's connection, so it needs read & write access and the app records it as that agent's edit.
Why can't I answer a question in the view?
An answer sent from the view would go out through the agent's own connection, and the record could no longer tell your answer from the agent answering itself. So the view shows the question and its options, and you answer on the thing in the app, on your phone, or by telling the agent in the chat.
Why does ChatGPT on my phone show text?
ChatGPT's iPhone and Android apps show the text answer in place of the view. Open the same conversation in ChatGPT on the web to see the view.
The view shows an older version of my thing. Why?
Each view shows what the last call returned, and it never refreshes on its own. Click the thing again from its parent or the workspace, or ask the agent to show it again, for a fresh read.
Why didn't my agent show the view?
Agents call the view tools when you ask to see, show or open something, and right after a create or edit you asked for. The rest of the time they read with plain tools such as get_thing. Ask “show me my Recipes workspace” or “open my packing thing” to get it.
Does the view work with read-only access?
Yes. Everything in it reads, so browsing works on any connection. Only ticking a checklist box needs read & write; on a read-only connection the box goes back and the view says the save was refused.
